The Hunt for the Perfect Bicycle: A Guide for Rookies

BikeFancy seeing yourself taking in all of Brisbane while on a bike? If you’re thinking about purchasing a bike, consider the kind of biking you picture yourself doing. Do you want to bike long distances, roads, trails, or just around your neighbourhood? Most bike shops carry road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrid bikes.

Below, The Yellow Jersey Bike Shop shares a short discussion of the different bike types to help you make an informed choice:

The Road Bike

Road bikes are great if you want to bike around paved grounds. These feature lightweight frames, skinny tyres, and a comfortable riding position where you simply bend over the handlebars. They’re great options if you want a higher speed and ride long distances.

The Mountain Bike

Mountain bikes are designed with adventure seekers in mind. These feature wide and knobby tyres and sturdier frames so that you can efficiently handle biking on rugged roads and trails, dirt, and grass. While these can’t reach the same speeds as that of road bikes, they are very durable and offer a more relaxed position when riding.

The Hybrid Bike

Hybrid bikes are a combination of mountain and road bikes, offering the most important features provided by mountain and road bikes. These are great for rides on pavement and shorter distances. These are similar in appearance to road bikes, but offer a more upright handlebar and riding position. Likewise, they can reach higher speeds than mountain bikes.

Buying Your Bike

Still unsure as to what type of bike you should get? Don’t fret, that’s what bike shops are there for. But, consider borrowing bikes or hiring them to get a feel for what you’ll be most comfortable riding. Once you have some idea on what you need, look around. Ideally, you must also take the bike for a test ride around 15 to 30 minutes to get a better feel for it. When you find the perfect bike for you—you’ll know it right away.
